Open Pit Geotechnics

At SRK we have the knowledge and experience to perform open pit studies from scoping to feasibility level, as well as provide operational support, across most major resource types. Our consultants, many with industry backgrounds, have worked on deposits on most continents for a mix of operators bringing both a broad perspective and international experience to your projects. We are able to deliver experts in key areas to assist you to achieve successful outcomes and we are happy to work closely with your teams to strengthen in-house capacity by transferring our understanding and skills. We have produced standard operating procedures and manuals for several major clients.
Our geotechnical services for open pit mining include:
- Geotechnical characterisation and domain modelling
- Slope stability analysis
- Failure mode analysis
- Overall pit wall design
- Bench / berm design
- Slope depressurisation and dewatering requirements
- Ground control management planning and stability monitoring
- Excavatability and trafficability assessments
- Blasting design
Our team of engineers and geoscientists utilise highly developed investigation and evaluation techniques. We offer a mix of analytical expertise complemented by sound operational experience to provide solutions that are innovative yet practical. We focus on the interpretation and application of geotechnical data to create a geotechnical domain model, representing sectors of the project site that are expected to have uniform geotechnical characteristics. Our team has highly developed numerical modelling capabilities, and we aim to create and analyses useful models to ensure that you get practical, focused results that add value to your projects. We have in-house expertise in:
- FLAC, FLAC 3D, UDEC, Slide, Map 3D and Phase 2 stability / stress modelling software
- Surpac, Datamine, Mine 2-4D and MineSight mining packages
- CHaSM rock mass and fragmentation evaluation systems
- Dips, SWedge, and Surfer software
- FeFlow and Seep W groundwater modelling packages
We work hard to stay at the forefront of industry and technological developments: our experts have participated on the large open pit study coordinated by CSIRO, and the Weak Rock Support group coordinated by ITASCA. We always look to apply new and innovative techniques such as Sirovision or 3DM Analyst and we are developing data collection improvements for rock mass classification
