Big data is the opportunity, not the solution

PERTH, AUSTRALIA — 27 February, 2017 -  Big data being the opportunity, not the solution was one of the key themes of the breakfast panel discussion held in Fremantle on Wednesday 22 February.  The event titled De-Risking Resource Evaluation - three perspectives on realising the true value of your geological data was jointly hosted by SRK Consulting and REFLEX.  Over 70 local geoscience professionals attended.

The event was chaired by SRK’s head of geology, Dr Matthew Greentree, assisted by REFLEX’s Global Product Manager, Michelle Carey, as Master of Ceremonies.  The panel of prominent industry geoscientists – Dr Campbell McCuaig, Dr Mark Tait and Daniel Guibal – discussed their thoughts on the geological data currently being acquired, how the data is being used, and what geoscientists of the future might look like.

The panel delved into some deeper discussions on real-time data, the understanding and communication of geological uncertainty between disciplines, the opportunities to view data differently through specialist data analysis and machine learning, what data will be collected in the future and how texture – a rock property that’s difficult to measure – can unlock the value of the data, from exploration through to the mill.
